Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions
Where are your dogs located?
Most of our dogs are part of our pre-adoption program and are not currently located in New Jersey. We work closely with rescue partners across the United States, where we determine the need is greatest.
What is the pre-adoption program?
Our pre-adoption program allows approved adopters to reserve a dog before they are transported to New Jersey. Once approved, your dog will be transported north, monitored for 24–48 hours upon arrival, and then go directly to their forever home.
Can I meet the dog before adopting?
Meet-and-greets are limited. Only local adult dogs currently in New Jersey and our senior dogs are eligible for meet-and-greet visits. Puppies and most transported dogs are adopted without an in-person meeting.
Why don’t you offer meet-and-greets for all dogs?
Because many of our dogs are transported from out of state, in-person meetings are not always possible. Our adoption coordinators work closely with our rescue partners and review temperament, behavior, and health information to ensure the best possible matches.
What happens when the dogs arrive in New Jersey?
Upon arrival, all dogs enter a 24–48 hour monitoring period. During this time they are bathed, groomed, and observed to ensure they arrived safely and in good health. Any necessary veterinary care is provided before they go home.
How do I start the adoption process?
Apply here to inquire about a dog. If the dog is available, we will send you an adoption application to complete.
How are applications reviewed?
Applications are processed on a first-come, first-served basis. We verify veterinary references, confirm landlord approval when applicable, and conduct a phone interview with an adoption coordinator.
Is there a deposit?
Yes. After a successful phone interview, a non-refundable $105 deposit is required to hold the dog. This amount is applied toward the total adoption fee.
What is the total adoption fee?
The total adoption fee is $555.
What does the adoption fee cover?
The adoption fee helps cover extensive care, including spay/neuter surgery, vaccinations, deworming, fecal exams, blood work, heartworm testing, veterinary exams, health certificates for travel, transportation to New Jersey, and any medical care needed upon arrival.
When is the remaining balance due?
After the $105 deposit, the remaining $450 is due on adoption day.
Do you do home checks?
Yes. Virtual home checks are required and will be scheduled using video conferencing software once references have been contacted and the adoption process is underway.

What if the adoption doesn’t work out?
While rare, if a dog does not adjust well to their new home, we have a back-up program in place. The dog will return to foster care and be made available for adoption within New Jersey.
Is your adoption program right for everyone?
Our pre-adoption model works well for many families, but we understand it may not be the right fit for everyone. We encourage adopters to choose a program they feel comfortable with.
